PREVENTING POST MENSTRUAL VAGINAL INFECTIONS

MENSTRUATION

Vaginal infection particularly, vaginal candidiasis is common among women in their menstrual age. Before menstruation occurs, there is a hormonal change that will trigger the process. This same hormonal trigger promotes the overgrowth of the small amount of yeast naturally present in the vagina. Vaginal candidiasis usually began at the start of menstruation.

A healthy vagina has a pH between 3.5 and 4.5. This environment promotes the growth of good bacteria and prevents the overgrowth of infection-causing bacteria and yeast. Blood, on the other hand, has a pH of around 7.3 so during menstruation, the blood changes the pH of the vagina temporary to alkaline which causes imbalance and promotes the overgrowth of yeast cells (candida).

It’s not uncommon to get yeast infections around your period because the pH balance of your vagina changes then. But it’s possible that rather than developing a new infection each month, the previous infection was never resolved.  Some preventive practices to help reduce the chance of getting infection after menstruation are as follows;

  1. Take in a diet with fresh fruits and vegetables and avoid sugary foods during this period.
  2. Practise a high level of personal hygiene. (replacing pads every 4 hours even if your flow isn’t heavy, and change your panties at least twice a day)
  3. Wear cotton panties and avoid heavy and tight cloths.

It is important to note that, there is a likely of a female developing vaginal candidiasis immediately after menstruation although these preventive practices have been followed. When this happens,the best option is to support your system to to restore the balance in your vagina. Check one of the supporting procedures below.
